Last night in Denver, Colorado, it snowed and I had to go out and clear the driveway this morning. What I found is that my snow thrower wasn’t quite working right. Instead of throwing the snow, it was pushing a lot of snow. Upon further inspection, I discovered that one of the augers was not turning while the other one was.
Before I continue, I want to emphasize the importance of extreme caution when working on a snow thrower. Even when the machine is turned off, the blades inside can jam and store energy like a spring. If they suddenly come unstuck, they can turn and cause serious injury. So please be cautious when dealing with the blades of a snow thrower.
In the case of my snow thrower, the issue was that a bolt was missing. Without this bolt, one of the augers was just turning freely on the axle while the other one was locked in place.
To fix this, I went to the hardware store and purchased shear bolts specifically designed for my snow thrower. These bolts have weak points designed to break under stress. This prevents the entire snow thrower from breaking apart if it hits something solid like a rock.
To install the shear bolt, I simply slid it into the hole and aligned it with the hole in the auger and axle. It came with locked nuts that tightly secured the bolt in place. It is crucial to use the proper shear bolts or shear pins for your specific snow thrower. Regular bolts are stronger and won’t break, potentially causing damage to the machine and voiding the warranty. For safety reasons, do not use regular bolts on a snow thrower.
In order to tighten the nuts, I used a crescent wrench to hold the bolt head and a ratchet wrench to tighten the nut. This fixed the issue with my snow thrower.
Most snow throwers are similar in design and may use shear bolts or pins for safety reasons. It is important to protect the snow thrower and yourself if you accidentally hit something solid while clearing snow. I hope you found this video useful or interesting.
